The STEAM After School Tutorial Program is held Monday- Friday 3:30pm -8:00pm and Saturdays 10:00am-1:00pm. The program consists of tutorial/homework help, STEAM workshops, fitness activities and life skills workshops. The STEAM After School Tutorial Program staff includes the Program Director, one program coordinator, and Academic Coach, three certified teachers and several workshop leaders.

 The long-term goal of the STEAM After School Tutorial Program is to provide academic support to youth that will allow them to achieve self- sufficiency. The short-term goal of the STEAM programs is to provide the children and youth with additional academic instruction and enrichment. The program objectives for the 2019-2020 are as follows:

  1. 90% of all the youth will make significant strides based on their individual education plan toward achieving grade level status by the end of the project period.

  2. 100% of the High School seniors will graduate with a post-secondary plan.

  3. 80% of the youth will increase basic life skills by 10% (i.e. financial literacy, cooking, nutrition, self-care, resume writing, job interview skills).

Certified teachers work with the youth, K-12, five days per week to help them achieve grade level status. The teachers work in small groups or provide one-on-one individualized instructions. The emphasis is placed on reading and math skills while including test taking skills, computer skills and enrichment activities. The teachers conduct assessments at regular intervals to determine student progress. Assessment tools include school-based reports as well as individualized assessment tools. The Academic Coach works with the teachers to assess the students and provide additional support throughout the school year.

The students participate in STEAM workshops a minimum of two hours each week. The sessions are led by a professionals (i.e. IT professionals, artists, engineers, and scientist). The students work in the computer lab, on hands on projects and group activities. The focus of the STEAM workshops continues to be the science of gardening, and entrepreneurship. The students will also participate in a series of music workshops during which they will learn how to write a song and produce it on the computer.

 The students participate in a minimum of 30-minutes of fitness activities per day. The activities include yoga, bicycling, basketball, martial arts, and swimming. The gardens on campus provide fresh vegetables for everyone to enjoy. There is a healthy snacks and meals are offered each day. The program is offered at no charge to the participants.
