Legacy of Compassion
Carrie Steele-Pitts Home (CSPH) embodies a legacy steeped in leadership and innovation. Established in 1888, this distinguished institution was founded by Mrs. Carrie Steele-Pitts, an African-American maid who, in her own right, became an icon. Situated in Atlanta’s Terminal Railroad Station, Mrs. Steele-Pitts, driven by compassion, founded CSPH when confronted with the plight of abandoned infants and children at the station. Operating from a box car, she, as an African-American woman in the 1800s, pioneered one of the nation’s inaugural orphanages for African-American children. More than 135 years later, CSPH's mission has evolved, yet its fundamental commitment to providing a secure, healing, and nurturing haven for the region’s most vulnerable children endures, paying homage to Mrs. Steele-Pitts profound vision.
