A Legacy of Resilience, Philanthropy, and Hope
The Steele Bridge stands as a testament to the enduring legacy and impactful life's work of Carrie Steele-Logan, a true hero and trailblazer in Atlanta's history. Rising above the shackles of slavery, she forged a path of philanthropy and entrepreneurship that continues to shape the city. From her days as a stewardess at early train stations to rescuing abandoned African-American children along the tracks, Steele-Logan's ingenuity and compassion knew no bounds. Her journey, chronicled in her autobiography, fueled the purchase of land and the chartering of the nation's oldest African-American orphanage in 1888—The Carrie Steele-Pitts Home. Today, this dedication echoes her tireless commitment, providing hope and service to thousands of children in Atlanta.
