Our Mission

Carrie Steele-Pitts Home (CSPH) embodies a legacy steeped in leadership and innovation. Established in 1888, this distinguished institution was founded by Ms. Carrie Steele, an African American maid who, in her own right, became an icon. Situated in Atlanta’s Terminal Railroad Station, Ms. Steele, driven by compassion, founded CSPH when confronted with the plight of abandoned infants and children at the station. Operating from a box car, she, as an African American woman in the 1800s, pioneered one of the nation’s inaugural orphanages for African American children. More than 131 years later, CSPH's mission has evolved, yet its fundamental commitment to providing a secure, healing, and nurturing haven for the region’s most vulnerable children endures, paying homage to Ms. Steele's profound vision. read more
